The Beginning . . .  In my early 40’s, after spending years in interior design marketing, I decided to use my creativity and energy in another field.

I began buying beads!  I love vintage jewelry, and I love Swarovski crystal!  I bought everything that looked interesting, so I often found contemporary, as well as antique pieces.

After collecting boxes of clasps, beads, findings and chain, I created my trademark piece – the charm bracelet. Each season, I design at least 20 different charm bracelets – in varying color ways and materials. I also design complementary earrings and necklaces. Materials used in my designs are sterling silver, gold-fill, Swarovski crystal, freshwater pearl, semi-precious stones, vintage chain, Victorian buttons and pins.

Philosophy . . . I do not follow trends. I concentrate on good, classic designs which my clients can wear today and twenty years from today. I make what I like – usually based on some vintage piece I own or have seen. I collect Miriam Haskell, Trifari, BSK, Kramer, Deco pieces – all inspirations for my own collection. My client base is loyal, and continues to grow. Clients tell me they wear my jewelry on an “every day” basis. Some wear only my pieces.

Website . . . In 2005, I launched my website at www.joanmaxwell.com, reaching the world with my designs. My collection is available only through boutique shows and the website

Boutique Shows . . . Most of my boutique shows benefit charitable organizations or groups. Each of these organizations provides necessary services and funding to an amazing number of individuals and groups. I am happy to donate a portion of my sales to these hardworking and giving organizations.

Boutique shows benefit the Hinsdale Junior Infant Welfare League of Chicago and the Children’s Clinic sponsored by Oak Park/River Forest Infant Welfare.

Deborah’s Place . . . A pet organization of mine is Deborah’s Place – a Chicago homeless shelter for women.  With facilities in several loop locations, Deborah’s Place offers shelter, meals, counseling and support services to hundreds of homeless women.  In its learning centers, Deborah’s Place provides classes in beading, art, humanities, resume writing and computer training.  I have found inspiration from the women who bead with me – in many ways.  I hope I offer each woman at the table a time to relax and experience her individual creativity.
